On this day, the cruise did not make any port stops but sailed through the three Sounds, offering a scenic viewing experience from the ship.

The first Sound to visit was the Dusky Sound.

Dusky Sound is one of the largest and most remote fiords in Fiordland National Park, known for its rugged beauty, dense rainforest, and dramatic cliffs. Named by Captain James Cook in 1770, it’s rich in history and wildlife, with frequent sightings of dolphins, seals, and seabirds. Its untouched, serene landscape makes it a highlight of scenic cruising in New Zealand.

The cruise ship went through the Dusky Sound and returned to the ocean.

I came back to my room to rest.

Then I went back out again to see the second Sound, the Doubtful Sound

Doubtful Sound, often called the “Sound of Silence,” is a deep, majestic fiord in Fiordland National Park, known for its tranquil atmosphere, towering peaks, and cascading waterfalls. Larger and more remote than Milford Sound, it’s accessible only by boat across Lake Manapouri and a coach ride over Wilmot Pass, adding to its untouched, mystical appeal. The sound is home to rich wildlife, including fur seals, dolphins, and sometimes penguins, making it a favorite for nature lovers and scenic cruising.

I went to the food court to sit at one of the tables.

And went out again for the last Sound, the Milford Sound

Milford Sound is the most famous of New Zealand’s fiords, celebrated for its breathtaking scenery with sheer cliffs, towering peaks like Mitre Peak, and dramatic waterfalls such as Stirling and Bowen Falls. Located within Fiordland National Park, it offers a stunning display of natural beauty, often enhanced by mist and rain that create countless temporary waterfalls. Despite its remote location, Milford Sound is accessible by road and boat, making it a highlight for both cruise passengers and land travelers.
