I made a stop at Mingus Mill.

Mingus Mill is a historic, water-powered gristmill built in 1886 near the Cherokee entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Instead of using a traditional waterwheel, it channels water through a long wooden flume to power an internal turbine, which drives the milling machinery inside.

Surrounded by forest and flowing water, the mill sits in a quiet, shaded clearing, making it a peaceful and photogenic stop along the park’s scenic drive.

Arrived at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center

Next to the visitor center is the Mountain Farm Museum

The Mountain Farm Museum is an outdoor collection of historic log buildings relocated from around the Smoky Mountain region and arranged to resemble a late-19th-century Appalachian homestead. Visitors can walk among cabins, barns, a smokehouse, a blacksmith shop, and an apple house, each showing how early mountain families lived and worked.

There is a nice walking trail along the river

I turned back here and headed back toward the farm.

Back at the farm

From the farm, the drive continued to the small town of Bryson City.

Bryson City is a small, quiet mountain town on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Its compact downtown has a few local restaurants, cafés, souvenir shops, and outdoor outfitters, all centered around a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

With the Tuckasegee River flowing nearby and easy access to rafting, fishing, and hiking, Bryson City serves as a peaceful base for outdoor activities. Unlike busy tourist towns such as Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, Bryson City feels slower and more local, offering a quieter end to a day of mountain sightseeing.

From here, I returned to my car

From Bryson City, I headed to Deep Creek Trail Trailhead.

I walked this trail mistakenly thinking it was Deep Creek, but later realized it wasn’t and stopped shortly.

Realizing this wasn’t the trail I intended to follow, I turned back here.

There was a nearby stream where people floated downstream on inflatable tubes for a gentle rafting experience.
