Richmond’s downtown combines historic architecture and Civil War landmarks with a lively arts scene, riverfront parks, museums, and restored warehouses filled with shops and restaurants, reflecting the city’s blend of history and modern energy.

Virginia State Capitol

The Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, designed by Thomas Jefferson and completed in 1788, is one of the oldest working capitols in the United States. Modeled after a Roman temple, it introduced classical architecture to American government buildings.

The Capitol has served as the seat of Virginia’s government since the 18th century and houses the General Assembly, Governor’s offices, and historic chambers. It also played a role in Confederate history during the Civil War when Richmond served as the Confederate capital. Today, it stands as a symbol of democracy and Jefferson’s vision of republican government.

The Carpenter Theatre in downtown Richmond is a beautifully restored 1928 movie palace that now serves as one of the city’s premier performing arts venues. Designed in an opulent Spanish Baroque style, it features ornate plasterwork, a grand chandelier, and a starry domed ceiling.

I turned around here and walked back to the Carpenter Theatre.

From downtown Richmond, I drove to the Maymont Mansion and Gardens.

The Maymont Mansion and Gardens in Richmond is a beautifully preserved Gilded Age estate built in the 1890s as the home of James and Sallie Dooley, a wealthy couple from Virginia.

Surrounding the mansion are 100 acres of landscaped gardens and parkland, including Italian and Japanese gardens, a carriage house, and a petting farm.

Today, Maymont serves as a public park and museum, offering visitors a glimpse into both the opulence of the Gilded Age and the natural beauty of its historic grounds.

The day I visited, the mansion was closed for reconstruction, but the gardens were still open to visitors.
