Schilthorn, Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Getting to Schilthorn was an adventure by itself. Starting from the Lauterbrunnen Valley floor, I first took the cable car from Stechelberg to Mürren. From Mürren, I took another cable car up to Birg, which is where I am now, and from Birg, I would take the third and final cable car to Schilthorn.

The town below is Mürren.

I am now on the cable car from Mürren to Birg, climbing higher into the mountains on my way to the top of Schilthorn.  A far away in the distance, I see the Birg station.

I have now arrived at Birg, the last stop before Schilthorn. From here, I would change to the final cable car that takes me all the way to the summit.

At Birg, I changed to the final cable car, and now I could see the Schilthorn station high above me, my final destination at the top of the mountain.

I finally arrived at the Schilthorn station, at 2,970 meters (9,744 feet) above sea level, after taking three cable cars up from the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

The Schilthorn station has a strong James Bond 007 theme because the mountain was a major filming location for the 1969 Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The mountaintop building appeared in the film as Piz Gloria, the hideout of Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

I stepped outside onto the observation area at Schilthorn, where I could walk around and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding Swiss Alps.

At the summit is Piz Gloria, the famous revolving restaurant featured in the 1969 James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. As the restaurant slowly rotates, diners can enjoy changing views of the surrounding Alps without leaving their tables.

As I walked around the observation area, the mountain scenery kept changing, giving me beautiful views of the surrounding Swiss Alps from every direction.

I found a stairway leading down to the lower level of the observation area, so I went down to see what else I could find.

From the lower level, I looked back up at Piz Gloria, which gave me a different view of the famous mountaintop building.

After finishing my visit to Schilthorn, I got back on the cable car down to Birg, enjoying the mountain views once again along the way.

The Birg Station

Instead of continuing straight down to Mürren, I decided to get off at Birg and spend some time looking around before taking the next cable car down.

Looking down from the observation deck, I could see a stairway built along the mountainside below, with people walking on it.

After spending some time looking around Birg, I got back on the cable car and continued my journey down to Mürren.

As the cable car descended, I could see the village of Mürren below, with its houses spread across the green mountainside.

After returning to Mürren, I continued my day by hiking down to the smaller mountain village of Gimmelwald. That walk and my visit to Gimmelwald will be in the next blog.
