Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979) was an American art collector, patron, and heiress to the Guggenheim family fortune. She was passionate about modern art and played a crucial role in supporting and promoting avant-garde artists and movements.
Move to Europe and Art Collection:
In the 1920s, Peggy moved to Paris and became deeply involved in the art scene. She began collecting artworks by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador DalÃ, Max Ernst, René Magritte, and others, forming an extensive and significant art collection.
World War II and Move to Venice:
During World War II, Peggy Guggenheim left Paris and moved to New York. After the war, she returned to Europe and, in 1948, decided to settle in Venice, Italy.
Peggy acquired the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, an 18th-century palace along the Grand Canal, to use as her home and to showcase her art collection.
