The fortress is located on Festungsberg, a small hill in the heart of Salzburg, Austria. The fortress is a prominent landmark, visible from almost anywhere in the city, and is one of Salzburg’s most famous attractions.
The right side entrance is where the FestungsBahn, the mountain cable car to the fortress, is located.
The FestungsBahn is one of the oldest funiculars in Austria, originally opened in 1892. It was built to facilitate access to the fortress, which was previously only reachable by a steep walk up Festungsberg hill. The funicular has been modernized several times, with the most recent upgrades ensuring a smooth and efficient ride.
After the cable car ride, I arrived at the fortress’s bottom.
