I visited four places in Charleston, West Virginia, starting at the West Virginia Veterans Memorial near the State Capitol.

The West Virginia Veterans Memorial is a four-sided black granite monument located near the State Capitol in Charleston. Its walls list the names of West Virginians who died in major U.S. conflicts, including both World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam.

This area is where government buildings are concentrated, including the State Capitol.

The State Capitol

The West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston is known for its striking gold-leafed dome, which is higher than the U.S. Capitol’s. Designed by architect Cass Gilbert and completed in the 1930s, the building features elegant limestone exteriors and marble interiors in a neoclassical style.

West Virginia State Museum.  The West Virginia State Museum, located inside the Culture Center near the State Capitol, explores the state’s history through immersive exhibits, artifacts, and interactive displays.

It covers topics such as early settlement, coal mining, the Civil War, and Appalachian culture, guiding visitors chronologically through key eras.

The museum highlights the daily lives, industries, and traditions that shaped West Virginia, making it a comprehensive introduction to the state’s heritage.

After the museum, I drove to the Downtown Charleston Historic District

The Downtown Charleston Historic District features preserved early 20th-century buildings, including commercial blocks, theaters, and civic structures.

It offers a mix of shops, restaurants, and cultural venues, giving the area a modest urban feel.

While smaller than big-city downtowns, it reflects Charleston’s regional importance and showcases the town’s architectural character and local community life.

The last place visited was the Capitol Market

Capitol Market in Charleston is a popular public market housed in a converted railroad freight station. It features indoor specialty shops and cafés, along with an outdoor farmers market that offers seasonal produce, plants, and local goods.
