Rich, Poor and In-Between. In 1800s Virginia, society was sharply divided: wealthy planters owned large plantations, controlled politics, and relied heavily on enslaved labor; poor whites often farmed small plots or worked as laborers with limited economic mobility; and a small in-between group of middling farmers, merchants, and skilled tradespeople existed, but overall the economy and social hierarchy were dominated by landownership and slavery.
