The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of America’s most scenic mountain drives, winding for 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
I drove the Blue Ridge Parkway from Cherokee to the Courthouse Valley Overlook, a journey of about two hours.
Designed for slow, relaxed travel, the road features dozens of overlooks where visitors can pull over to enjoy sweeping views of layered, blue-tinted ridges stretching toward the horizon.
Traffic is limited to non-commercial vehicles, keeping the route quiet and peaceful. With picnic areas, short hiking trails, and interpretive signs along the way, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers a gentle, scenic journey rather than a fast point-to-point drive, making it one of the most enjoyable roadways in the eastern United States.
During the fall season, the trees along the Blue Ridge Parkway and in the surrounding Appalachian mountains go through a dramatic color change. The green summer canopy turns into a mix of red, orange, yellow, and gold as maples, oaks, hickories, and other hardwood species prepare for winter. However, during June, every view area looks the same.
It is amazing that such a large area is covered with dense forests and layered mountainsides of trees, stretching as far as the eye can see.
