I wanted to visit the European Parliament while I was in Brussels, so I made another short walk around the city before heading there.

Looking down to my right, I saw a beautiful building structure, so I walked over to take a closer look.

I wasn’t sure what the building was, so I turned around and continued walking in the other direction.

This beautiful Gothic building is the Church of Our Lady of the Sablon, one of Brussels’ finest examples of late Gothic architecture.

Across from the church, I came to the beautiful Petit Sablon Square, a small formal garden centered around the monument to Counts Egmont and Horn.

The monument in the center honors Counts Egmont and Horn, who were executed in Brussels in 1568 after opposing aspects of Spanish rule.

The Palace of Justice, completed in 1883, is one of Brussels’ most imposing landmarks, known for its enormous dome and monumental architecture.

The European Parliament represents the citizens of the European Union. Its members are directly elected every five years and take part in making EU laws, approving budgets, and overseeing other EU institutions. Parliament works in three cities: Brussels, Strasbourg, and Luxembourg. Strasbourg is its official seat, while much of the committee and political work takes place in Brussels.
