Napier’s Art Deco charm is one of its defining features. After a devastating earthquake in 1931, the town was largely rebuilt in the architectural style of the time—Art Deco—resulting in one of the most complete and cohesive collections of Art Deco buildings in the world.

Walking through the town feels like stepping back into the 1930s, with bold geometric shapes, sunburst motifs, and pastel colors adorning the facades. Many buildings also incorporate Māori design elements, giving Napier’s Art Deco a uniquely New Zealand character.

The town celebrates this heritage with guided walking tours, vintage car rides, and an annual Art Deco Festival where locals dress in period attire, swing bands play, and the whole city comes alive with 1930s flair. It’s a must-see stop for architecture lovers and anyone who enjoys a bit of time travel with their sightseeing.
