Wellington’s city center

Cuba Street is Wellington’s iconic, lively pedestrian area renowned for its eclectic mix of quirky shops, vibrant street art, cozy cafés, local boutiques, restaurants, and energetic atmosphere. It’s popular with locals and tourists alike, offering great opportunities for shopping, dining, people-watching, and experiencing Wellington’s unique cultural vibe.

Cuba Street was named after an early settler ship called the Cuba, which arrived in Wellington harbor in 1840. The street itself doesn’t have a direct connection to the country of Cuba; instead, its name commemorates the vessel that brought some of the city’s first European settlers.

The line to take the cable car. The Wellington Cable Car takes passengers from downtown Wellington (near Lambton Quay) up to the hillside suburb of Kelburn, where you can visit the Wellington Botanic Garden, enjoy panoramic views of the city and harbor, explore the Cable Car Museum, and easily access the nearby Zealandia eco-sanctuary.

Arrived at the mountain hill side

Although called a cable car, Wellington’s iconic transport is more accurately described as a hillside tram.
