Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of South India’s most famous Hindu temples and a major landmark of Madurai. Dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi and her consort Lord Sundareswarar, the temple is renowned for its towering, colorful gopurams covered with thousands of intricate sculptures.

Much of the present complex was built and expanded during the Nayak period in the 16th and 17th centuries, although the temple’s history goes back much further. Inside are numerous shrines, pillared halls, courtyards, and the sacred Golden Lotus Pond, making it both an important pilgrimage site and an extraordinary example of Dravidian architecture.

The Meenakshi Amman Temple was not built by a single ruler. Its origins are ancient and are traditionally associated with the Pandya dynasty, which ruled Madurai for centuries. The temple was dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, a form of Parvati and the patron goddess of Madurai, and to her husband Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva.
