The university
Princeton University is known for its beautiful collegiate Gothic architecture—stone walls, archways, towers, and ivy-covered facades that give the campus a historic, almost castle-like atmosphere. Many buildings date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, including Nassau Hall, the oldest structure and a landmark of American history.
Academic halls, libraries, and residential colleges are arranged around green courtyards, blending traditional design with modern facilities. Newer buildings introduce contemporary architecture, but the campus still feels unified, elegant, and deeply academic. It is a place where history and learning are reflected in the architecture itself.
Princeton University, founded in 1746, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the United States and a member of the Ivy League. Originally established in Elizabeth, New Jersey, it later moved to Princeton, where it now sits on a scenic, historic campus known for its Gothic-style architecture, ivy-covered buildings, and tree-lined walkways. The campus blends tradition with modern design, creating a peaceful academic environment.
Nassau Hall, built in 1756, is Princeton’s oldest building and once held the entire college. It served as a Revolutionary War site, housed Congress in 1783, and today remains Princeton’s historic administrative center and enduring symbol of the university’s past.
Princeton is well known for its strong undergraduate focus, offering small class sizes and close interaction between students and faculty. It is especially respected in fields such as public policy, economics, physics, engineering, literature, history, and mathematics. The university also houses world-renowned research institutes, including the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and the Institute for Advanced Study, where Albert Einstein spent his later years.
Students live in residential colleges, which form the heart of campus life through dining, housing, and community activities. Princeton is also home to notable landmarks such as Nassau Hall, the University Chapel, and Firestone Library, one of the largest university libraries in the world.
The university has produced U.S. Presidents, Nobel Prize winners, Supreme Court justices, authors, and world leaders. Its alumni include Woodrow Wilson, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Michelle Obama, and Jeff Bezos.
Firestone Library, Princeton’s main library, holds millions of books, manuscripts, and archives. With reading rooms, study spaces, and research collections, it serves as a major center for scholarship and supports students and faculty across all fields of study.
Princeton University Chapel, completed in 1928, is a grand collegiate Gothic building with vaulted ceilings and vivid stained-glass windows. It hosts services, concerts, and major university ceremonies, serving as a spiritual and ceremonial center of campus life.
My back side
The Princeton University Art Museum is one of the finest university museums in the United States. Founded in 1882, it holds a large and diverse collection—over 100,000 works of art from ancient civilizations to modern and contemporary periods. It was closed for renovation when I was there.
