Atlantic City has a history rooted in tourism, leisure, and grand coastal entertainment. Established in 1854 with the arrival of the Camden & Atlantic Railroad, it quickly became a popular escape for city dwellers seeking ocean air and relaxation.

The construction of its famous boardwalk in 1870—built to keep sand out of hotel lobbies—changed everything. Hotels, restaurants, and amusement piers followed, and the city evolved into a premier seaside resort during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

By the early 1900s, Atlantic City was booming with theatres, grand hotels, bathhouses, and a lively social scene. It became known for saltwater taffy, beauty pageants, and beach culture, eventually hosting the Miss America Pageant in 1921, which helped solidify its place in pop culture.

After World War II, tourism declined as Americans traveled farther and year-round to new destinations. To revive the economy, casino gambling was legalized in 1976, making Atlantic City the first U.S. city outside Nevada to offer casinos. Resorts and high-rise hotels transformed the skyline, drawing new waves of visitors and gamblers.

Today, Atlantic City remains a blend of old and new—historic boardwalk, beaches, casinos, and entertainment—reflecting its long evolution from Victorian seaside getaway to modern coastal resort.

The boardwalk stretched on ahead, but I had seen enough and chose to turn back toward my starting point.
