On the way from the Kröller-Müller Museum to Amsterdam, I stopped in Utrecht to explore this charming historic Dutch city.

I walked toward Utrecht’s old city through a modern shopping center that connects the train station with the historic center.

The Dom Tower is Utrecht’s most famous landmark and the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, rising above the historic old town.

The Dom Tower, completed in the 14th century, is Utrecht’s most famous landmark and the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. It once formed part of St. Martin’s Cathedral, but a violent storm in 1674 destroyed the cathedral’s nave, leaving the tower separated from the church.

Utrecht University Hall (Academiegebouw), next to the Dom Tower, is the ceremonial heart of Utrecht University. The university was founded in 1636 and is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands.

The Domkerk, or St. Martin’s Cathedral, was the religious heart of medieval Utrecht, when the city was the most important ecclesiastical center in the northern Netherlands. Built beginning in the 13th century, the great Gothic cathedral symbolized the power and influence of Utrecht’s bishops. A violent storm in 1674 destroyed its nave, permanently separating the church from the Dom Tower.
