I stopped at Battery Spencer to view the Golden Gate Bridge on the way to Sausalito City from San Francisco.
Battery Spencer
Sausalito City. Sausalito is a charming city located in Marin County, California, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s known for its beautiful waterfront, houseboat communities, and art galleries.
I wanted to see the floating houses and wondered if this location was correct.
The Sausalito downtown waterfront
A ferry from San Francisco is arriving. The city far away is San Francisco.
On the way to Point Bonita Lighthouse, I stopped at this location for another view of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The end of the protruded land point is Point Bonita, where the lighthouse is located.
I drove to the closest parking lot for the lighthouse and walked to it.
Hiking to Point Bonita Lighthouse from the parking lot is a short and scenic out-and-back trip of about 0.5 miles (0.8 kilometers). The trail winds along the cliffs, offering stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco Bay, and the Pacific Ocean.
The lighthouse
It’s the only lighthouse in the United States accessible only by a suspension bridge, built in 1954 after previous access routes succumbed to erosion.
Built in 1855, it was the third lighthouse on the West Coast after San Francisco’s infamous fog sent many ships crashing against the headlands.
