St. Mary’s Abbey – The ruins of this Benedictine abbey are located within the Museum Gardens. Founded in the 11th century, the abbey was once one of the wealthiest and most powerful in the country.

Like many religious institutions, St. Mary’s Abbey was dissolved during the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII in the 16th century. The dissolution led to the closure of religious houses and the confiscation of their assets.
