The Matrimandir is the spiritual and architectural center of Auroville, an experimental international community near Puducherry in Tamil Nadu. Auroville was founded in 1968 with the vision of creating a community where people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds could live together in harmony.

The Visitors Centre includes exhibits about the history and vision of Auroville and the development of the Matrimandir.

The goal was to create a community dedicated to human unity, rather than one based on nationality, politics, or a particular religion. People from 124 countries and all Indian states participated in Auroville's inauguration, each bringing soil from their homeland to symbolize unity.

Its guiding vision came from Mirra Alfassa, known as “The Mother,” who worked with Indian philosopher and spiritual teacher Sri Aurobindo.

At its inauguration on February 28, 1968, young people representing 124 countries and 23 Indian states placed soil from their homelands into a ceremonial urn, symbolizing international unity.

Since then, Auroville has developed into a community with residents from many countries, focusing on areas such as education, sustainable living, environmental restoration, arts, and spiritual development.

The large golden ball-shaped structure is the Matrimandir, the spiritual center of Auroville. Its spherical form is covered with golden discs that reflect sunlight, giving it its distinctive appearance.

Inside is a quiet, white meditation chamber with a large crystal globe at the center. It is not a religious temple; it was created as a place for silent meditation, concentration, and personal reflection.

The inner chamber can accommodate about 100 people at a time for silent meditation and reflection.

There were several buildings around Auroville, but the area was very quiet, with few people around other than tourists.

Visitors must book in advance for a session of silent concentration in the Inner Chamber. Each person generally makes an individual booking, and visitors must be at least 10 years old. Same-day bookings aren't offered.

Usually, a tour group only walked to the viewing area and looked at the golden sphere from outside, that would be normal. Tour groups aren't simply taken inside as part of the tour.

More than 50 years later, Auroville continues as an experiment in international community living, although its ambitious vision of complete human unity remains a work in progress.
